Public Sector - School-based traineeships 2020/2021

The Public Sector School-based Traineeship targets current Year 10 secondary students for an opportunity to apply for and work within the Western Australian public sector. If accepted, the student will undertake paid part-time employment over year 11 & 12. Upon successful completion of the traineeship, the student will be awarded a Certificate II in Government (Public Administration) which will count towards their Western Australian Certificate of Education (WACE).

Recruitment and Referral Service Outline

Once you have submitted your application, the Public Sector Commission will consider if you are suitable. If your registration is accepted, you may be referred to public sector agencies that have a vacancy for a school-based trainee. This means your resume will be sent to agencies for their consideration. This may require you to attend an interview so that they can assess your suitability. If you are a successful candidate, you will commence your school-based traineeship in February the following year (as a Year 11 student).

As a school-based trainee you will work two days (15 hours) a week and attend school the other three days over an 18 month period. Your school's VET Coordinator will decide what days you work in liaison with the agency. Note that you should be prepared to work through school holidays (unless annual leave is negotiated with your agency), as you will be classified as a part time employee.

As school-based trainee you will:

·         earn a trainee wage paid by your agency

·         perform public administration duties

·         deliver a service to clients

·         follow workplace safety procedures

·         work in a team environment

·         use a range of software, technology and office equipment

·         work effectively with diversity

·         achieve foundation knowledge and skills in best public administration and governance practices.

School-based trainee wage rates

As a school-based trainee you will be paid a training wage of approximately $159.45 per week in Year 11 and $174.30 per week in Year 12.

Please note the wages listed change annually. To check the most up to date wage, go to the Department of Mines, Industry, Regulation and Safety website and search for rates for pay for public sector trainees.

You are eligible for the public sector traineeship program if you:

·         have achieved a C grade or higher in Year 10, semester 1  English and Maths subjects and be deemed academically capable of undertaking a traineeship by your school (check with your school's VET Coordinator)

·         have a good attendance history at school

·         are an enthusiastic, reliable and dedicated student who will be committed to maintaining your schooling as well as the school-based traineeship requirements

·         are an Australian citizen, permanent resident or holder of an eligible working visa, who is currently living in Western Australia.

The 2020-2021 intake will open for applications in early Semester 2 2019. Eligible Year 10 students will be able to register via the WA Government Jobs Board.
